Course Description:
This course is an expansion in the area of advanced image manipulation. It introduces the concept of digital illustration.
Assignments are designed to explore 3D surface qualities, texture, image layering and raster painting.
Students will focus on creating realistic textures for 3D characters and environments. Digital manipulation
and painting are utilized to create image texture maps. Special topics will include the creation of bump maps,
specular maps, saturation maps, and opacity maps.
PREREQUISITES: VC2002, CA1033, CA2133, CA2173

Outcome Objectives:
The objective of this course is to gain a good solid understanding of the intricacies of image painting and texture
creation and be able to exhibit those attributes by creating quality paintings that utilize a variety of advanced
techniques including blending modes, layers and channels. The student will also investigate advanced texture
creation techniques while experimenting with the understanding of materials and shaders inside of a
3D software such as 3D Max.


Upon successful completion of this

Grading & Classroom Policies:

There are no free late assignments. All work is considered important.
Take note: If you fail to turn in work on time in this industry, you won’t have a job for very long.
Use this class to get in the habit of turning in work on time. Late work will be accepted one week past the due date.
The highest grade obtainable for one week late is a B. No work will be accepted after the one-week extension.
The student will receive a zero for that project. In addition, you will be responsible for keeping all notes and handouts.
In the event you miss class, you will be expected to obtain any notes you may have missed as well as any assignments given.
Exceptions are up to the discretion of the instructor.

Attendance Policies:
Students are expected to be on time and present for every class. There will be a 30-minute break in the middle of class.
It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor if class is missed. Regular class attendance is expected
and required. If a student misses 3 or more classes in any one course during the quarter, he/she may be dropped
for lack of attendance at the discretion of the faculty member. Any conflicts with scheduled deadlines should
be brought to the instructor’s attention
BEFORE they arise.

Professional Behavior:
You are expected to act in a professional manner while in this class. No offensive language or temper tantrums will be tolerated.
Please be respectful of your classmates. Not everyone is open to all words, music, visuals, etc. Students should help each other
in their common goal to graduate. Your classmates are your first experience with networking. Be very mindful of those you pass
on the way in. You never know whom you’ll have to pass on your way up. There will be no eating, drinking, or smoking in class.
You may use headphones on cd and/or mp3 players. No telephones or pagers should be activated during class. If you must have
your cell phone or pager active, please set it to vibrate and not to ring. No guns are allowed on campus.

Should you for any reason find it necessary to meet with me outside of class, you can locate me during my office hours,
as indicated outside the Faculty workroom 220. Follow the appointment procedure at the door. Should you need to

Major Note: All work for this class to be graded must be stored in the following directory:
Store work on the school server Public T:\ Haydel \Homework \Max \Surface\ make a folder with your name on it,
Last name-underscore-first initial (example: Smith_ j). Each assignment will be saved in a folder labeled assignment 1, 2 and so on.
You will also turn in a folder with your name on it with all the files required for the assignment in it.
This folder will be turn into the D: drive of my faculty computer in class. The computer number is DL-322-01, in a folder named Haydel_burn.
This class is part of the Animation Art and Design forum. A class thread will be started and all students in the class
are required to create a personal thread to display the progress of their work during the quarter. You must also post a final example of your work
in a predetermine thread. Keep a hardcopy for yourself. Failure to do all of these requirements will result in a letter grade of (F).

In addition, always save a backup hard copy of all your work on a USB pendrive, CD, or other storage device.

Week One: Introduction to class. Overview and description of an animation production (from script to post-
Production. Review animation tracks. Scanning techniques, file formats (good quality
vs. poor as it pertains to animation). Image compression. Importance of Photoshop file format.
On-line school forum registration, forum use.

Assignment 1: Create a personal thread for the class
Reading: Start Freaky Frank Tutorial – In 3D texture Workshop

Week Two:
Character Illustration using Photoshop. On-line school forum.
registration, forum use.

Assignment 2: Choose line art character for colorizing. Select 5 images with high contrast to create
background for line-art character. Due wk. 5
Reading: Continue Freaky Frank tutorial – In 3D texture Workshop
Read pages (12-23) (46-55) – In Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Techniques

Week Three: Background creation for line-art assignment. Painting on layers, techniques for masking,
using blending modes, dodge and burn tools for highlights and shadows. Painting textures on
low- poly models. Introduction to 3D Max, editing low-poly models, applying textures, rendering
image.

Assignment 3: Create a new painted texture for the given low-poly model. Due wk. 5

Week Four: Continue 3D Max overview, merge model into lighted background. Camera rendering.

Assignment 4: Render images. Create 3 image composite in Photoshop. Due wk. 5

Week Five:
QuickTime VR. Demo Cosmo player. How to post VR file on forum. Demo on mapping
3D vest. Poly ID, UVW Map Modifier, map channels, Texporter.

Assignment 5: Export .WRL file out of max and post on forum. Scan in leather texture for
Vest project. Due wk. 6

Week Six: Material Editor demo. Bump map, specular, diffuse channels. Composite map exercise.

Assignment 6: Create texture maps for vest model (color, bump, specular, diffuse) Due wk. 8

Week Seven: UVW Unrap Modifier. Creating grunge textures for surfaces.

Assignment 7: Create grunge maps for environment scene. Due wk. 9

Week Eight : Texture creation for facial surfaces. Open session, work on grunge project in class.

Assignment 8: Create a new head texture for the provided mesh

Week Nine: Texture baking, batch file processing. Work on final project.

Week Ten: Work on final project

Week Eleven: Final project due
