Course Description
This course is a preparation and review of an individual's portfolio book. The portfolio book will be used to develop
concepts and storyboards for the creation of a demo reel in the student's chosen course of study.
PREREQUISITES: AD2003, CA2043, AD2013
Course Objections
The objective of this course is to asses the student’s strengths and weaknesses, to correct those weaknesses and augment
the strengths and as a result, compile a professional quality portfolio book and leave-behind. By the end of the course,
students will complete a print portfolio as well as a leave-behind portfolio.
Grading & Classroom Policies:
There are no free late assignments. All work is considered important.
Take note: If you fail to turn in work on time in this industry, you won’t have a job for very long.
Use this class to get in the habit of turning in work on time. Late work will be accepted one week past the due date.
The highest grade obtainable for one week late is a B. No work will be accepted after the one-week extension.
The student will receive a zero for that project. In addition, you will be responsible for keeping all notes and handouts.
In the event you miss class, you will be expected to obtain any notes you may have missed as well as any assignments given.
Exceptions are up to the discretion of the instructor.
Attendance Policies:
Students are expected to be on time and present for every class. There will be a 30-minute break in the middle of class.
It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor if class is missed. Regular class attendance is expected
and required. If a student misses 3 or more classes in any one course during the quarter, he/she may be dropped
for lack of attendance at the discretion of the faculty member. Any conflicts with scheduled deadlines should
be brought to the instructor’s attention BEFORE they arise.
Professional Behavior:
You are expected to act in a professional manner while in this class. No offensive language or temper tantrums will be tolerated.
Please be respectful of your classmates. Not everyone is open to all words, music, visuals, etc. Students should help each other
in their common goal to graduate. Your classmates are your first experience with networking. Be very mindful of those you pass
on the way in. You never know whom you’ll have to pass on your way up. There will be no eating, drinking, or smoking in class.
You may use headphones on cd and/or mp3 players. No telephones or pagers should be activated during class. If you must have
your cell phone or pager active, please set it to vibrate and not to ring. No guns are allowed on campus.

* Sketchbook for creating portfolio pieces and general note taking.
* Mass storage media.
* Pencils, lot’s of pencils.
* Professional quality portfolio book 11 x 14 (available in the bookstore).
* Leave-behind portfolio

as indicated outside the Faculty workroom 220. Follow the appointment procedure at the door. Should you need to

Major Note: All work for this class to be graded must be stored in the following directory:
Store work on the school server Public T:\ Haydel \Homework \Max \Portfolio I\ make a folder with your name on it,
Last name-underscore-first initial (example: Smith_ j). Each assignment will be saved in a folder labeled assignment 1, 2 and so on.
You will also turn in a folder with your name on it with all the files required for the assignment in it.
This folder will be turn into the D: drive of my faculty computer in class. The computer number is DL-322-01, in a folder named Haydel_burn.
This class is part of the Animation Art and Design forum. A class thread will be started and all students in the class
are required to create a personal thread to display the progress of their work during the quarter. You must also post a final example of your work
in a predetermine thread. Keep a hardcopy for yourself. Failure to do all of these requirements will result in a letter grade of (F).
In addition, always save a backup hard copy of all your work on a USB pendrive, CD, or other storage device.
Grades:
Class time consists of lectures, discussions, and critiques. You will be evaluated on your contributions to your own work as well as to the class.
You will want to keep a sketchbook with you at all times. You will have to produce an enormous amount of work for this class and a sketchbook
is handy for jotting down ideas as well as creating images for your books. You should bring the sketchbook and any new work with you to every class for evaluation.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
WEEK 1: Go over syllabus and expectations for class.
Discuss influences, inspiration and the importance of keeping a sketchbook.
Discuss requirements for both books.
Discuss levels of “quality”.
WEEK 2: Begin review of each student’s current 2D work.
Discuss animation track choice with each student.
Begin developing layout comps for the leave-behind portfolio.
WEEK 3: Continue one-on-one conferencing regarding student’s 2D work.
Students work on their portfolio pieces.
WEEK 4: Go over what is due for midterm.
Continue working on portfolio pieces.
Continue evaluation of portfolios in progress.
WEEK 5:Midterm
Due at the beginning of class: A minimum of ten (10) new plusall existing, completed portfolio pieces.
These pieces should be originals but I will accept some high quality prints (please see me first). These pieces must be presented in the required portfolio book.
Due: Final layout designs for leave-behind book.
WEEK 6: Continue working on portfolio pieces.
Continue evaluation of portfolios in progress.
Continue development of leave-behind book.
WEEK 7: Discuss resolution requirements for printouts.
Demo how to scan and put together images in Photoshop.
Discuss ideas for enhancing existing pieces.
Continue evaluation of both portfolios in progress.
WEEK 8: Mock portfolio review.
Last day to work in class on portfolio.
WEEK 9: Portfolio review. Book is due at the beginning of class.
The review will begin after roll is checked. DO NOT BE LATE. If you come in late,
you will not be allowed to participate in the review and will fail the class.
WEEK 10: Tweak portfolio pieces.
WEEK 11:Final Review. This review will be in class. It will start at the beginning of class.
The Final Portfolio Book:
* The goal of the review is to ensure that all Portfolios leaving the school are of the highest caliber, which in turn increases the chances for the students to reach their ultimate goal of acquiring employment in the various industries associated with animation.
* The reviewers will review the books based on input from professional resources. Any below-standard books will be rejected and the student will fail the Portfolio 1 class.
Examples of below-standard quality :
* Bent pages.
* Not enough pieces.
* Poor quality printouts.
* Bad composition.
* Messy presentation.
* Wrong portfolio book.
* Unsatisfactory drawings and/or drawing ability.
Students will be responsible for taking notes during their review.

The first Portfolio Book review:
The first review of books will take place in week 9 during your class. Both portfolios are due at the beginning of class. You will have 2 weeks to make all necessary changes, as recommended by the review panel. The final review will take place in class week 11. No late books will be accepted! No exceptions! Criteria For Final Book:
You must present your work in a professional quality portfolio book, 14 x 11, no larger than 14 x 17. These portfolios are available in the school supply store.
Please make sure your book is free of resumes, bits of paper, etc. Only artwork is allowed in the book for review . The Leave-behind portfolio:
The leave-behind portfolio is used to give potential employers a preview of your drawing, painting, Photoshop, etc. skills. These books should be between 8-12 pages. The format will be 8.5 x 11. This book should be well designed, well organized by subject matter and look professionally printed. I will not accept any low-res printouts!
You will present both books for review, during class, the 9 th week of school.
