Course Description:
In this course, The student will be introduced to the very basics of the 3D modeling, character setup, animation and composting using multiple software applications.
In addition, the student will demonstrate knowledge of using the forum and proper file saving. The student will create basic projects which compile the animation pipeline.

Outcome Objectives:
When you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to:
Visualize a concept and communicate it in one of several media
Utilize basic software principles in the creation of artwork

This textbook must be purchased in order to pass this class.

Grading & Classroom Policies:

There are no free late assignments. All work is considered important.
Take note: If you fail to turn in work on time in this industry, you won’t have a job for very long.
Use this class to get in the habit of turning in work on time. Late work will be accepted one week past the due date.
The highest grade obtainable for one week late is a B. No work will be accepted after the one-week extension.
The student will receive a zero for that project. In addition, you will be responsible for keeping all notes and handouts.
In the event you miss class, you will be expected to obtain any notes you may have missed as well as any assignments given.
Exceptions are up to the discretion of the instructor.

Attendance Policies:
Students are expected to be on time and present for every class. There will be a 30-minute break in the middle of class.
It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor if class is missed. Regular class attendance is expected
and required. If a student misses 3 or more classes in any one course during the quarter, he/she may be dropped
for lack of attendance at the discretion of the faculty member. Any conflicts with scheduled deadlines should
be brought to the instructor’s attention
BEFORE they arise.

Professional Behavior:
You are expected to act in a professional manner while in this class. No offensive language or temper tantrums will be tolerated.
Please be respectful of your classmates. Not everyone is open to all words, music, visuals, etc. Students should help each other
in their common goal to graduate. Your classmates are your first experience with networking. Be very mindful of those you pass
on the way in. You never know whom you’ll have to pass on your way up. There will be no eating, drinking, or smoking in class.
You may use headphones on cd and/or mp3 players. No telephones or pagers should be activated during class. If you must have
your cell phone or pager active, please set it to vibrate and not to ring. No guns are allowed on campus.

Instructor Availability:
Should you for any reason find it necessary to meet with me outside of class, you can locate me during my office hours,
as indicated outside the Faculty workroom 220. Follow the appointment procedure at the door. Should you need to

Major Note: All work for this class to be graded must be stored in the following directory:
Store work on the school server Public T:\ Haydel \Homework \Max \Anim_Fundamentals\ make a folder with your name on it,
Last name-underscore-first initial (example: Smith_ j). Each assignment will be saved in a folder labeled assignment 1, 2 and so on.
You will also turn in a folder with your name on it with all the files required for the assignment in it.
This folder will be turn into the D: drive of my faculty computer in class. The computer number is DL-322-01, in a folder named Haydel_burn.
This class is part of the Animation Art and Design forum. A class thread will be started and all students in the class
are required to create a personal thread to display the progress of their work during the quarter. You must also post a final example of your work
in a predetermine thread. Keep a hardcopy for yourself. Failure to do all of these requirements will result in a letter grade of (F).

In addition, always save a backup hard copy of all your work on a zip disk, CD, or other storage device.

Weekly Schedule: Assignments and due dates are subject to change, notification will be given in advanced.

Week 1.
1. Show examples of student work and talk about the process they use to create it.
2. Explain in detail the process of animation. (from concept to post production)
3. Make sure they get logged on to the forum. Lecture on the forum and how to post.
4. Show the student how to FTP on the forum.

Week 2.
1. Show Max's interface. Show the tutorials for Max.
2. The basics of box modeling.
3. Homework: Still life tutorial in Max.

Week 3.
1. Studio: have the student box model a VERY simple character.
2. Show the smooth mesh modifier.
3. Put 1 basic texture (already created) on the character.

Week 4.
1. With the model created, show the student how to use the bone tools and the skin modifier to their character.
2. Try to have the student have their simple character boned and skinned by the end of class.
3. The Skin modifier.

Week 5. Midterm Exam

Week 6.
1. Show the basic rigging,
2. Have the student create 10 seconds of animation
3. Show them the camera.


Week 7.
1. Show the student how to light their animation
2. Show the students how to render tga with an alpha channel

Week 8.
1. Intro to after effects
2. show them how to bring their tga into after effects
3. show them how to import sound
4. bring a photoshop background drawing into after effects
5. Export TGAs

Week 9.
1. Intro to Combustion: (Possibly)
how to bring max file into combustion.

Week 10.
Take all the students TGAs and have the students us Premier to edit them together.

Week 11. Final Exam
